As a part of an addition to the Rotterdam City Archive’s student films, this shortfilm reimagines the terror attack at Rotterdam’s Gulf Oil refinery from the perpetrator’s perspective as her affection for the orchestrator evolves before, during and in the aftermath of the failed explosion.

HISTORY


In 1971, the Gulf Oil refinery exploded at Rotterdam’s Europoort. The explosion, actually a botched terror attack, was intended for an Israeli storage unit nearby. It was carried out by Evelyn Barge on the orders of her lover Mohamed Boudia, the Paris representative for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. This act of terrorism has been mainly forgotten and undocumented in history, but deserves to be told.

CONCEPT


Videos from the archive of the industrial harbour is juxtposed with videos of the complexity of human interractions, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the trials of love. Layered on top a voice-over reads a fictional poem from Barge’s imagined perspective.
